Downton Abbey Season 4 is now underway in the United Kingdom and somehow life is still going on despite the absence of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens). Don’t get us wrong. Those final scenes of Season 3’s Christmas episode showing Matthew bloody and bruised in a ditch continue to haunt us (okay, so maybe not “haunt” but they’re definitely not pleasant to think about).
Thankfully, though, the actor who played our favorite English muffin is still walking around being alive and beautiful. He’s just in the US rather than the UK seeing as Dan and his family relocated after he left Downton. So we’re wondering: Is Dan Stevens watching Downton Abbey?
By all accounts he isn’t. Yet.
“I have to wait until January like everybody else, and watch it on PBS, because I live in America now,” he told Vulture in September. “I guess I’ll be watching it in sort of two ways: both watching my friends on the set that I know very well, but also just continuing the story of Downton and watching it as a fan. It will be fun.”
Fun or not, we imagine it be a little difficult to watch a show you were once an integral part of; it be kinda like Facebook stalking an ex. Sure, you were the one who did the dumping, but you still sort of cringe when he posts photos and just looks so freakin' happy. How could his life go on without you, right?
Dan might be able to relate now that the series has started off with such popularity. Downton’s first two episodes have hit new ratings highs and the premiere attracted almost 1 million more viewers than Season 3’s first episode leading critics to pose an unthinkable question: “Matthew Crawley, who?”
Dan, if you need a shoulder to cry on, we’re here for you.
