Rose MacClare (Lily James) is one of those Downton Abbey characters who just seems to flit about from episode to episode. She doesn’t quite have the memorable sass of her cousin Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), nor the regrettable bad luck of Edith (Laura Carmichael). Instead, the beautiful Rose appears rather bored at Downton, always looking for a new way to have fun.
“A band?!” Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) exclaims upon hearing Rose’s plan for Lord Robert’s (Hugh Bonneville) bash. “Shh. Nobody must know,” the mischievous blonde replies. “We’ll get the carpets rolled up and everything arranged during dinner so that when his Lordship walks out, there it is.”
Sounds so simple...for Rose, who will be eating dinner while the downstairs staff must muster enough spare hands to prepare for the band. Mrs. Hughes, seasoned housekeeper that she is, already foresees difficulties.
“So I have to find them food and beds. How many are there?” Mrs. Hughes says with a sigh.
“Six, I think.” Oh good! Just six in an already crowded household. Thanks, Rose!
All teasing aside, Rose’s surprise could mean interesting things for Episode 6.
Second, the frontman on this jazz band is the dashing Jack Ross (Gary Carr), whom we met back in Episode 3. The smooth American clearly left an impression on Rose? Could forbidden romance be on the agenda for the evening’s activities?
