This time last year, Downton Abbey fans in the United Kingdom were blithely enjoying Season 3. Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) had finally gotten hitched and were trying to have a baby. After seasons of strife, everything seemed to be coming up roses for the couple. Little did we know what dastardly plot twist lay just around the corner.

Fast-forward a year and now, of course, the Christmas 2012 special is infamous amongst all Downtonites with the scenes of Matthew crushed to death in an automobile accident forever seared into our brains.

In the immediate aftermath of Matthew’s shocking exit, angered fans vented their rage online, accusing show creator Julian Fellowes of ruining their Christmas. In fact, the (completely justifiable) rants got so heated, Julian admits he feared for his personal safety.

“I was afraid to go out without bodyguards,” the 64-year-old Oscar winner said during a recent interview, according to a Daily Mirror report.

Although Jules went on to add “I love Dan. I wish him nothing but good things” we’re not 100 percent convinced that’s the entire true. After all, Dan’s departure for greener pastures led to Julian forking over the money for bodily protection...

What do you make of the news Julian Fellowes hired bodyguards because of Downton Abbey? Completely necessary or kind of silly? Sound off in the comments below.
