Downton Abbey is alive with the sounds of babies crying! Last season saw the arrival of not one but two bouncing bundles of joy. First came, little Sybbie, the daughter of Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) and Tom Branson (Allen Leech). Then arrived George, the long-awaited son of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens).
Sadly, both births were shadowed by sadness with Sybil dying from eclampsia, a complication of childbirth, and Matthew dying from a car wreck, a complication of stupidity.
Now in Season 4, Sybbie and George can expect a new roommate in the nursery. As was confirmed in Episode 6, Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) is expecting! The news came as a shock not only to viewers but also to Edith. Currently unmarried, Edith pushed the boundaries of 1922 social etiquette by indulging in a night of passion with her paramore, Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards), before his departure to Germany.
Edith clearly faced none of the same fertility struggles as Mary, conceiving from that one evening with Michael. Unfortunately, however, her pregnancy looks to be no happier than those of her sisters. Michael has gone missing, leaving Edith an unwed, pregnant woman of high rank with few options.
Will she find a way to be happy or will her pregnancy be as cursed as the others at Downton? Only time (and Episode 7) will tell...
