Less than 24 hours after the U.K. finale of Downton Abbey Season 4 back in November there was already a photo from the season’s Christmas special (aka the February 23 finale in the U.S.). The Crawleys and Crew look dashing as they pose for a picture fit for a holiday card.
Who made it into the frame? Over on the left, we see the bad boys of the downstairs staff, Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) and Jimmy Kent (Ed Speleers). Both fellows had unfinished business as of the February 16 episode with the question of what hold Thomas has over lady’s maid Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) remaining unanswered.
Then comes Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael). Does her inclusion in the photo mean she’s not leaving to “improve her French” with Aunt Rosamund (Samantha Bond) who is noticeably absent from the family gathering? We also spy Tom Branson (Allen Leech) but not his new love interest, opinionated schoolmarm Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis).
New faces in the crowd include Lord Merton (Douglas Reith), Lady Mary’s godfather who seemed to take a shine to the widowed Isobel (Penelope Wilton) during the last episode. Also, Harold Levinson (Paul Giamatti) looks dapper as Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) playboy brother.
Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) takes center stage, lovely in burnt orange. Neither of her beaus — Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden) and Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) — appear, but that hardly means these lovesick lads won’t show up.
Rose MacClare (Lily James) appears to have recovered from her broken engagement with Jack Ross (Gary Carr) while the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) looks as healthy and well as ever (thank goodness after the scare she gave us in the February 9 episode).
We’ve been told there won’t be any deaths in this year’s finale, but seeing as this is Downton Abbey, we doubt there’ll be a shortage of drama. What do you think the show has in store for us? Begin your hypothesizing in the comments below.
