When will Downton Abbey stars learn bad things happen when you leave the Abbey? The most recent example: Lily James, who plays mischievous Scottish cousin Rose MacClare, was filming upcoming live-action movie Cinderella when her dress caught on fire!
At the time, Lily, who stars as Cinderella in Disney’s new take on the fairy tale, was wearing a massive bridal dress. With three miles of hemming and bedazzled in Swarovski crystals, the gown is so large the actress reportedly can’t see what’s in front of her — including a badly placed heater.
“It had turned really cold and someone had put a three-bar heater a bit too close to where Lily was going to sit on a stool,” says Sandy Powell, one of the film’s costume designers. “Luckily, just a segment of the silk dress got burnt. Thank god, Lily wasn’t harmed.”
You’ve got that right! The 24-year-old actress plays a leading role in the latest installment of Downton Abbey and by all accounts will be returning as Rose in Season 5 of the drama. The fifth series begins filming in just two months at which time we’ll need all Downton Abbey stars back, preferably not roasted.
Lily says she’d only had the elaborate costume on for “about 20 seconds” when she accidentally burned it. At first she was in tears until actor Ben Chaplain, who plays her onscreen father, said “Well, I’ll wait a while before I make the Cinders joke.”
“I went, ‘Oh no!’ And I was laughing through my tears,” Lily says. “I was fine,” she adds. “I wasn’t hurt, just a bit shocked for a little while.”
If you need help getting the smoke out of the gown, just ask Mrs. Hughes. That veteran housekeeper probably knows a tip or two when it comes to tricky stains.
