On Downton Abbey, the Crawley family is loaded…most of the time. They’ve had their fair share of financial struggles over the years, nearly losing the farm more than once, but for all intents and purposes, Lord Grantham and his ladies are well-situated in life. Can the same be said of the actors who bring the family to life onscreen?
While we doubt any of them will be buying a centuries-old estate, the Downton Abbey cast isn’t having any trouble paying the bills unlike some of the downstairs staff they play on camera. Specifics are few and far between on actual take-home amounts but we do know a few Downton stars have seen their paychecks double since the show started in 2010, according to the Daily Mail.
In fact, most have secured some kind of raise as ITV attempts to keep any more members of the crew from pulling a Jessica Brown Findlay or a Dan Stevens and peacing out before the series ends. While hard numbers haven’t been leaked, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) has hinted her bank account’s looking more robust than ever.
“It’s a very solid and successful job; it just gives you that sense of security, I guess. I mean, I own a flat now,” she told the Daily Mail just weeks before the Season 4 Christmas Special aired in the United Kingdom in December 2013.
For more established actors on set, a flat is just the beginning. Maggie Smith (the Dowager Countess) is worth an estimated $8 million. Granted, that’s after an illustrious decades-long career but her Downton paycheck probably doesn’t hurt!
