Michael Gregson is missing. Poof. Gone. Disappeared. But before he vanished, the latest love of Lady Edith’s (Laura Carmichael) life seemed like the real deal. He practically swept the heartsore Edith off her feet the moment she walked into his office at The Sketch.
Their romance was a whirlwind, with Michael introducing his new writer to the likes of Virginia Woolf and other English luminaries. The two were so in love Michael told Edith he would leave home and move to Germany for the sole purpose of gaining citizenship so he could divorce his mentally insane wife and marry Edith.
The couple’s last night together was a special one in more ways than one and a buoyantly happy Edith left Michael’s tender embrace confident he would return. But months passed and no word arrived from Munich. The Sketch conducted its own private investigation, but turned up nothing except a rumor that, during his first night in town, Michael had gotten into a fight with some “brown-shirted” rogues, most likely members of Germany’s newly created Nazi Party.
Did Michael survive the skirmish? Will he return to Edith and learn of the child they made together? Sadly, we don’t know. Season 4 ends more than a year after Michael leaves England and there’s still no clear answer as to his whereabouts.
Plenty has happened in Edith’s life — more on that here — but Michael? Julian Fellowes isn’t saying and neither is Charles Edwards, the actor who plays him. His IMdB gives no hint if he’ll appear in Downton’s fifth season; that begins filming this month, however, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any updates to Charles’ acting résumé.
