We knew filming on Season 5 of Downton Abbey would start the same month the fourth season ended in the United States, and now we have official confirmation cameras are rolling! A new addition to the cast couldn’t bottle up his excitement (thankfully!) and shared the happy news via Twitter.
“First day on DOWNTON ABBEY duty. Was downstairs in GOSFORD PARK. Been promoted upstairs. Progress? Will wait and see,” actor Richard E. Grant tweeted February 15.
Richard played first footman George in the Julian Fellowes-penned and Academy Award-winning movie Gosford Park; he’ll return to Julian’s creative world in Season 5 as a new Downton character named Simon Bricker. Of the three additions announced to date we know the least about Simon, only that he’s a “guest” of the Crawley family.
Of course, filming on Downton could technically have started earlier this month with Richard just being called to set last week, but this is the first confirmation we’ve had that Season 5 is underway.
We also know one other thing about Richard’s character: He wears gloves. “Must be true 'cos they've got my name on it,” he captioned a photo from wardrobe of a pair of spiffy looking black gloves.
So why the gloves, Richard? Is it cold at Downton, Richard? Are you outside, Richard? Who are you outside with, Richard? Tweet us the truth!
