You know that classic Christmas carol, “I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus”? Well, we have some new lyrics and they involve a certain Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and one of the two highly eligible suitors currently pursuing her. A new snapshot from the set of Downton Abbey Season 5 shows Mary locking lips with a very handsome gentleman.

Before we saw who the lucky lad is, however, can you guess which beau caught Mary in a warm embrace? Last we left her, she was juggling both the dashing but distant Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) and the charming but reserved Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden). Despite their help in the Season 4 finale, Mary kept both at arm’s length, not ready to commit to either as she continued to deal with her grief over losing husband Matthew (Dan Stevens).

Well, we think little miss Mary may have changed her tune after seeing photos snapped during Season 5 on February 16. In the pictures, taken in London for a scene set in Liverpool, Mary’s seen kissing the tall, dark, and handsome Gillingham as they emerge from — get this — a hotel!

We’re not sure how far into the season the cast currently is but seeing as a new character just tweeted a picture from his first day of filming last week, our guess is not very far. So what does this mean in terms of that kiss? Well, either we’ve done another time jump and Mary’s made her choice — unlikely as show creator Julian Fellowes has said he wants to keep Downton in the 1920s for the foreseeable future — or things are heating up between Mary and Gilly. After all, he did leave his fiancée to be with her.

But what does this mean for Mary’s other ardent suitor, Charles Blake? Could his days pursuing the chilly but beautiful Mary be numbered? Is heartbreak ahead in Season 5?

What do you think? Is Lord Gillingham the clear winner of Mary’s heart or was this just a friendly peck? Share your romantic hopes and dreams for the eldest Crawley daughter in the comments below.
