Stop the presses! We’ve got news about Downton Abbey’s next season — and while it's just a small morsel, it tell us plenty about the direction of Season 5.
First thing’s first: Who are the new characters? There’s actually six of them, and they’re all under the age of 12. Say what? Did the Abbey just get converted into a boarding school? Actually, yeah, kind of.
The Hastings Observer over in the U.K. reports that Hastings Stage Studio acting students Nyah Braisby, Sophie Apthorp, Louis Selling, Morgan Smith, Brandon Pohlhammer, and Harry Seymour will all appear in Season 5.
Two of the boys will appear as choirboys and have already started filming alongside the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), while all of the children were cast as students in the local village school, the Hastings Stage Studio director tells the local paper.
Now let’s process that information. The mention of the village school has us thinking we’re not done with seeing schoolmarm Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis). Perhaps her hesitant beau, Tom Branson (Allen Leech), pays her a visit at work?
And why would the Dowager be in the company of a choir? Do we have scenes in a church next season? Is someone getting married? Does someone die? Does the Dowager die?!
Take a few deep breaths, calm yourself, and then tell us what you think this latest casting update tells us about the Season 5 plot. We’ll be over here exhaling into a paper bag.
