Grab your smelling salts, Downton Abbey devotees. The latest gossip from upstairs is one of the show’s leading ladies will be leaving the series after Season 5 wraps.
Who could it be? We’ll calm your fears: the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) is supposedly still onboard and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) has assured us she’s sticking with the series as long as they’ll have her. The star we may be waving goodbye to: Scottish lass Rose MacClare (Lily James).
In her downtime from the ITV series, Rose has been dabbling in movie roles and in fact landed the plum part of Cinderella in the latest big screen adaptation of the classic fairy tale. Her commitment to the glass slipper is actually what might take her away from Downton, with The Daily Mail flat out saying Lily’s leaving.
“Disney will release the picture next year, around Easter, and they have requested that Lily make herself available to help market the movie around the world,” the outlet writes. “She would be beginning her duties as a Disney Princess around the same time as Downton Abbey starts filming its sixth season.”
If filming begins on the same schedule as this year (mid-February), The Daily Mail may just have it right but we’re still hesitant to call Rose an official Downton alumna.
Thankfully, if she is leaving, it won’t be because the Grim Reaper pays yet another call at the Abbey.
“The Downton overloads don’t want Lady Rose written out of the show,” The Mail says. “They will have her ‘bubbling’ away, but out of sight, and have urged her to come back and appear in the special Christmas episodes.”
And so midnight strikes on yet another Downton Abbey character.
What do you make of the news? Think it’s nothing but fiction or could you see Rose leaving the show? Tell us in the comments!
