Pinch us because we have to be dreaming. The latest news claims Downton Abbey Season 5 might potentially air at the same time in both the UK and the US. People, this is huge!

What has our bloomers in a twist is a recent interview show creator and keeper of the keys at Downton Julian Fellowes gave The Telegraph where he actually comes out in favor of airing the season at the same time in both nations. And here we’d always thought it was the higher-ups at Downton HQ who insisted the UK see the season first, in September, and we Americans wait until the following January for the very same episode!

“I want to have simultaneous transmission in America and Britain,” said Julian. “The difficulty that we have is that people are discussing the series as it happens online before America’s seen it and on the internet we’re all in the same company. It’s madness.”

Jules, your words have never moved us more. He goes on to explain that of course he doesn’t mean “exactly the same time” because of the different time zones, but he does think airing a new Downton episode on the same day would give everyone “a chance to watch it.” He points to the success of the BBC’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, which simulcasted in the US and the UK, as proof it can be done.

“All this talk that’s it’s impossible is wrong,” Julian concludes in what we can’t help but take as a slight jab at the show’s American channel, PBS and, more specifically, PBS executive Paula Kerger who has kept the party line of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” whenever the topic of airing Downton Abbey earlier has come up.

We don’t want to mess with that if it’s working so well,” she’s previously said on the matter. Well, Paula, Julian has spoken and he’s kind of a big deal.

Would you welcome this change or want to be all Dowager Countess on us and keep things the way they are?
