What’s this we’re hearing bouncing down the Downton Abbey hallways? Is there another wedding on the horizon?
We don’t have any official confirmation yet, but our Spidey senses are tingling after seeing this role listed for Season 5, Episode 2 of Downton: Wedding Guest. Two little words that could mean so many, many things.
First theory: Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) fast-tracks it to the altar. The thread of Season 5 picks up six months after where Season 4 left off and both of Mary’s beaus, Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) and Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), appear to be in the upcoming premiere. Perhaps that means Mary finally makes her choice or maybe one of the men waves the white flag?
Second theory: The wedding is part of an elaborate flashback sequence. Downton’s not a big fan of the misty memory motif but the actress listed as “Wedding Guest” is the same actress, Ancuta Breaban, who portrays “Russian Refugee” in Episode 1. This could be mere coincidence/Julian Fellowes keeping the budget tight, or Ancuta could be a VIP to fellow Russian refugee and new Downton character Kuragin (Rade Serbedzija). They could also be getting married in real time at Downton although Ancuta appears to only be booked for the premiere and Episode 2.
What do you think? Are we reading into this or do you hear wedding bells ringing too?
