In Downton Abbey's season 2 premiere last night, we were horrified to learn that the Great War isn't even the biggest obstacle to Lady Mary and cousin Matthew's troubled romance.
Rather, dear readers, he is engaged.
To someone else.
The oh-so-delicate Lavinia Swire swooped in as the surprise new fiancee of the future Earl of Grantham. Mary, meanwhile, got herself a new suitor in the uber-rich, super-sleazy Sir Richard Carlisle.
But despite the presence of these others, Mary's feelings could not be repressed and she vowed to tell Matthew the truth of her feelings ... until Lavinia's sympathetic weeping and general helplessness got to Mary's conscience.
Instead, Mary bid goodbye to Matthew, returning to the war, and gave him a prized stuffed animal as a good luck token that he had to promise to bring back "without a scratch." (Sniffle)
Matthew got the train to an unknown fate — and Mary may never get the chance to tell him she loves him.
Did their parting leave you disappointed?
