Now that poor William has passed on, Bates is in prison, and evil Thomas has been promoted, Downton Abbey is hiring a new manservant. And the hottie cast in the role for the highly anticipated Season 3 will do just fine. In fact, seriously fine.

The new manservant is named Alfred, and will be played by Matt Milne, who looks like a mix between Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy (which is pretty much our ideal). Creator Julian Fellowes tells TVGuide, “He is a contentious figure right from the start because he is the nephew of O’Brien,” who fans know is the most detested and conniving of all the Downton downstairs staff.
But we couldn’t have been the only ones to notice some actual emotions creep into O’Brien’s normally dark moral outlook. O’Brien was finally starting to show signs of empathy, regret, and possibly even a new distaste for student-in-crime Thomas’ increasingly wretched behavior. Could Alfred serve as O’Brien’s foil?
“Alfred worked silver service at a hotel,” Julian continues, “and tries to serve that way, which would never be done in a home. It really rattles Carson.” Manners, please!
Other spoilers include a sneak peek of the always-epic season finale. “The supersize season finale will find the family doing something we haven’t yet seen,” reports TVGuide. “Taking a summer vacation.”
The scariest part about that? “Only some of the staff [are] invited,” says star Hugh Bonneville. What would the Dowager Countess say?!
