In a recent interview with TV Guide Magazine, actress Gillian Anderson revealed that she was offered the coveted role of Lady Grantham on the hit PBS period drama, Downton Abbey.
The 43-year-old X-Files star explained that she was almost a part of the Downton cast after the interviewer asked her about the current trend of British projects faring very well across the pond.
She revealed, “Hopefully people will embrace it with the same love that flowed toward Downton Abbey. I was actually offered a part in Downton.”
Anderson later confirmed that the part in question was that of Cora Crawley, a role that is now played by Elizabeth McGovern.
The uber successful show — which is currently filming its third season — recently added Shirley MacLaine to the cast in the role of Cora’s mother.
Despite passing on the golden Downton opportunity, Anderson has her own British-centric television project to be a excited about: Her upcoming adaptation of Great Expectations.
Let’s hope Great Expectations can share some of Downton’s success, television could always use a little more Gillian Anderson.
