Downton Abbey’s third season has so far delivered a new baby, a tragic death, Bates’s (Brendan Coyle) freedom, and a handsome new footman (Ed Speleers) who catches Thomas’s (Rob James-Collier) eye.

There’s only one more episode left to air on PBS — the Christmas special, “A Journey to the Highlands” — and it promises to be both a tearjerker and a game changer.
