The Downton Abbey Season 3 finale — the Christmas Special, “A Journey to the Highlands” — is airing this coming Sunday, February 17, and it will bring another tragic twist for the Crawley family.
Sybil’s death post-childbirth cracked even the Dowager’s snark-encrusted heart, and now another beloved Downton resident is about to meet their maker.
Spoilers ahead! If you don’t want to know what happens on the finale, move along to something — anything — else.
Take a deep breath, chaps, because this one’s gonna hurt.
In the episode, the Crawley family travels north to Duneagle Castle in Scotland. Amid a rash of new romances and a country fair, Lady Mary gives birth to her and Matthew’s first child — a boy. As a giddy Matthew drives to Downton in his motorcar to deliver the good news, he gets in an accident and dies.
Kind of a buzzkill, are we right? It will be interesting to see where Lady Mary’s love life goes from there when the sudsy Julian Fellowes drama returns for Season 4.
