Who doesn’t love Dowager Countess Violet Crawley? Played by the incomparable Maggie Smith, the Dowager Countess keeps everyone at Downton on their respective toes while giving us loyal viewers an often much-needed dose of humor — and the internet some of its best memes.
One of the Dowager’s favorite targets is son and Earl of Grantham Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) though she hardly spares the Abbey’s other residents, be they blood-related or otherwise. But beneath her airs and old-fashioned ways, the Dowager always has the Abbey’s best interests at heart...even if she has to call in the Americans for help.
