Downton Abbey

Lady Edith Crawley

Sandwiched between two famously attractive sisters — the icily gorgeous Mary (Michelle Dockery) and fiery beautiful Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), [RIP!] — it’s easy to forget dear Lady Edith, played by British theater actress Laura Carmichael.

Well aware of her lower rank in the Crawley family, Edith has spent the past three seasons doing almost everything she can to shine. First, she pined over the departed Downton Abbey heir Patrick while his fiancée Mary couldn’t wait to stop wearing black. Then, she begins a tortured love affair with the much older Sir Anthony Strallan that spans World War I and all three seasons (Spoiler: it doesn’t end well).

Jilted and jaded, Edith turns to the one love that’s never let her down: Writing. When Season 3 ends with Edith seemingly embroiled with yet another unavailable and inappropriately aged man, we can’t help but roll our eyes, take a cue from The Brady Bunch, and say, “Edith, Edith, Edith. Will you never learn?”

Edith was introduced in Season 1, Episode 1: "April 1912."
