Born in Northamptonshire, Brendan Coyle is of Irish and Scottish descent. He holds Irish citizenship and has lived in both London and Dublin. Before joining the cast of Downton as John Bates (a part Julian Fellowes specifically wrote for the actor), Brendan performed primarily on the stage. He starred a play called The Weir. The role earned him the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in 1999.
