We're used to hearing about outrageous celebrity incomes, but the one Dr. Dre might be getting just may be the paycheck with the most zeroes yet. The 49-year-old rapper is declaring himself the "first billionaire in hip hop" amid reports that Apple is buying his company Beats Electronics. (Sorry, Diddy. You were so close.)
According to the Financial Times (via CNET), Apple is "in talks" to acquire Beats, and the deal is worth $3.2 billion — but nothing is official yet.
Beats is known for its high-profile (and high-priced) headphones. Just recently, the company got into the online music biz with the debut of Beats Music — a competitor to services like Spotify, Google Play Music, and even Apple's own iTunes Radio.
That didn't stop Dre from celebrating his good fortune with pal Tyrese Gibson, though! In a video posted to and then removed from Tyrese's public Facebook page, the two guys freak out about Dre's success. (YouTubers snagged the video before it was taken down, though. Check it out below, but be warned that there is strong language!)
"The Forbes list just changed! S—t just changed!" Tyrese raves.
"The first billionaire in hip hop right here from the motherf—king West Coast," Dre adds.
Without the deal, Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, is worth an estimated $550 million. Here's hoping, for his sake that this celebratory video isn't him counting his chickens before they hatch!
