Drake Calls Out Macklemore for Grammy Text to Kendrick Lamar
If Macklemore needed any more street cred after earning himself a slew of Grammys earlier this year, he can thank Drake for starting what might be Mack’s very first rap feud.
Drake chatted with Rolling Stone about a certain text Macklemore sent Kendrick after the Seattle, Washington, native snagged Best Rap Album during this year’s awards ceremony. In the text, which Macklemore shared via social media, Mack said although he was “honored” by the award, Kendrick “deserved” it and his win had “robbed” the fellow performer.
Seems like a nice enough message unless you’re one of the other nominees in the category. Cue Drake who told RS that the “Thrift Shop” performer’s message rubbed him the wrong way.
“That s—t was wack as f—k,” Drake told the magazine, not mincing words. “I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music.’”
Drake continues that the whole move “felt cheap” to him. “It didn’t feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?”
And speaking of those other guys, Drake says everyone in the running — Kanye West and Jay Z, being the other two noms — should have heard from Macklemore. “To name just Kendrick? That s—t made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!”
