Drew Barrymore on How Her Family Life Is Different From Her “Wacky Upbringing” (VIDEO)

Drew Barrymore has been my spirit animal ever since she appeared on the big screen in E.T. Her free spirit and whimsical style has always struck a chord with me as I navigated my own childhood laced with impromptu etiquette lessons from a British grandmother and understanding the importance of “appropriate” school, work, and play attire.

While my childhood and perhaps that of others may have been a tad stiff, Drew’s was anything but. The 38-year-old actress recently opened up to C Magazine for their 2013 summer issue and explained how her own family life with husband Will Kopelman and 9-month-old daughter Olive is very different from what she knew growing up as part of the well-known Barrymore family.

She explains that she has always wanted the tight family unit that her in-laws seem to have. Will’s mother Coco is a philanthropist, his father Arie is the former Chanel CEO, and his sister Jill Kargman is an accomplished novelist.

“I won the in-laws jackpot,” Drew tells C. “It might be the best karma for having one of the wackiest upbringings. I never had dinner with my mom or dad, let alone together.”

Drew’s parents — actress Jaid Barrymore and actor John Drew Barrymore, son of film legend John Barrymore — divorced when she was just 9 years old. Drew’s dad, who passed away in 2004, has been described as an absentee father, and she has been estranged from her mother since a young age.

Since Drew never ate together with her family before or after the split, she describes, she had always assumed dining rooms were for dinner parties, and nothing more. “I told [Will], ‘Dining rooms are stupid. They shouldn’t exist. When was the last time we had a dinner party?’”

When Will explained that they would use it for family dinners, C says Drew burst into tears. “Family dinners would never have occurred to me, and that’s what I want most,” she says. “Now it’s my life mission to figure out this room.”

We are ecstatic to hear that after her two young engagements, her third marriage, giving birth to her first child, and blooming through the years to become one of the most successful actresses of her generation in Hollywood, Drew has finally found her groove. And the real reason behind a dining room.
