Duck Dynasty Star Phil Robertson Suspended For Insensitive Remarks (UPDATE: Sarah Palin Speaks in His Defense)

Update (December 19, 2013):

In the wake of Phil Robertson’s controversial anti-gay comments, none other than Sarah Palin has spoken out on the issue. In addition to being suspended from his gig on Duck Dynasty, the reality star has garnered lots of negative media attention for his stance on homosexuality, and the former vice presidential hopeful thinks he’s being unfairly judged.

“Free speech is endangered species,” Sarah posted on her Twitter and Facebook accounts. “Those ‘intolerants’ hatin' & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all.”

It’s no surprise to us that Ms. Palin’s got Phil’s back here. The politician and her family recently socialized with the Robertson family during her holiday book tour in Louisiana. Plus, she’s been very vocal in the past about her shared beliefs with the conservative family, even applauding Phil’s son Willie for speaking out against abortion at the National Rifle Convention earlier this year.

Just one thing, Sarah. A&E is a television network, not a governmental institution. Phil has the right to speak his mind, but they also have the right to remove him from the show, should they choose to.

What do you think of Sarah’s comments? Let us know below.

Original story (December 18, 2013):

Phil Robertson isn’t exactly shy about speaking his mind, but it seems his latest comments were a bridge too far for A&E execs. Following publication of his recent GQ interview, which included some remarks that could be construed as homophobic and racially charged, the powers-that-be behind reality juggernaut Duck Dynasty have decided to put Phil on a little break from filming, according to a report in The Wrap.

Among Phil’s most troubling comments in the interview: that homosexual sex is “illogical,” and that being gay is just a hop, skip, and a jump from bestiality. In the same interview, Phil also asserted that African Americans in his home state of Louisiana were happier before the civil rights movement.

We’d like to believe that Phil’s insensitive remarks are just a case of foot-in-mouth disease, but regardless of what he intended to say, A&E issued a statement distancing themselves from Phil’s unpopular opinions.

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” the press release begins. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

We have to wonder just how long the hiatus will be, given the fact that Duck Dynasty is far and away the network’s biggest hit right now. It’s also not the first time Phil and A&E have butted heads.

In the past, Phil has accused the network of inserting bleeps to make it sound like he and his family were swearing when they weren’t (they do not use profanity, according to Phil), and editing out their prayers to downplay their evangelical Christian roots.

Are you surprised by A&E’s decision to cut ties with Phil for now?
