This week’s State of the Union address had quite a colorful crowd of attendees, including — but not limited to — Ducky Dynasty’s very own Willie Robertson. Another person up on Capitol Hill for the event was NBA star Jason Collins, who made history last year for being the first active basketball player to come out as gay. We know what you might be thinking: awkward!
It wasn’t really, says Jason, who was sitting just feet away from the conservative A&E reality star. And he doesn’t seem to mind that Willie was invited to the event.
“Why not?” he tells TMZ. “He’s a citizen of the United States and he has a right to be there just as much as any other citizen …” That is true!
The basketball pro admits that he didn’t speak to Willie or his wife Kori at all, though they did pass one another in the hall, because “they were moving from one Republican to another Republican.” Not surprising, considering that the couple was there as guests of newly-elected Republican Louisiana State Representative Vance McAllister.
And if Willie had spoken with Jason, we’re curious how that conversation would have gone. After all, the NBA star has been speaking out for the LGBT community since he came out, and Willie’s dad Phil notoriously slammed gay culture in a GQ interview last month.
For his part, Jason says he’d like to have a sit-down with Willie and the rest of the Robertson family. “I wish that he wasn’t moving as quick and we would have had the opportunity to talk,” he explains. Have a brief conversation. It starts with a conversation … to shake someone’s hand or open your mouth.” Here’s hoping!
