Reality TV families may not seem much like normal people, but tragedy darkens their doorsteps just as it does ours. In Closer Weekly, Jase and Missy Robertson of Duck Dynasty discuss one of their biggest heartbreaks as a couple: Missy’s miscarriage.

“I was about eight to ten weeks along when I miscarried, just enough time to be excited about it and start telling everyone,” Missy tells the publication. This was back in 2002, after the births of the couple’s two sons, Reed and Cole.

They’ve since welcomed daughter Mia, whose multiple surgeries to correct her cleft lip and palate have been documented on the A&E series.

Looking back on her and Jase’s loss in 2002, Missy tells Closer, “I’d heard of tubal pregnancies for years but didn’t really understand the mental anguish of actually having to go in and have someone remove what could’ve been your child. It was extremely difficult, and there was a lot of pain and bleeding.”

Just 30 at the time, Missy worried she wouldn’t be able to have any more children, but just three months later, she discovered she was pregnant with Mia. She was nearing the end of that pregnancy when she and Jase learned Mia would be born with at least a cleft lip, if not more severe issues.

“When Mia came out, I looked at her and thought, ‘This is going to be rough,’” Jase tells Closer, adding that he quickly got perspective on the issue when doctors voiced concerns the newborn couldn’t breathe on her own. “I thought, ‘Why am I so upset about what she’s going to look like?’ I just wanted her to live.”

And live she did! The whole family is healthy and happy these days, with Jase saying, “As long as we’re living, we can get through anything.”
