Ellen and Katherine both tried out for parts in Alias, ABC's espionage thriller that starred Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow, a grad student-turned-CIA operative whose spy world turns out to be a family affair. The show lasted for five action-packed seasons between 2001 and 2006.
Ellen first caught the eye of the the Alias head honchos after starring opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in 2002's Moonlight Mile. "We sat down and talked about me possibly doing an arc," she told TV Guide. "That didn't happen."
Sydney does have a half-sister on the show.
And as for Katherine, the Alias producers had her audition for multiple parts — including the character Lauren Reed, Sydney's (evil) romantic rival. But that part went to Melissa George — who, coincidentally, played surgeon Sadie in Season 5 of Grey's. (You can see Melissa just to the right of Jennifer Garner in this pic!)
''That's when I wanted to quit,'' Katherine revealed to Entertainment Weekly in 2007. ''But [Alias creator J.J. Abrams did send me a letter apologizing, and he was wonderful. I kept that letter on my fridge for two years because I felt like I needed it to remind me to keep going.''
We're glad she did!

Before they saved lives together in the first five seasons of Grey's Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) both auditioned — unsuccessfully — for roles in a long-running spy drama.
We would have loved seeing them as undercover operatives — especially if the roles involved seductive disguises, elaborate wigs, and inventive gadgetry — but we're glad they found fame on Grey's instead!
