On Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke portrays Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and mother to the world’s only living dragons. At first glance, you wouldn’t think that down to earth brunette Emilia shares much in common with larger than life, platinum-haired Dany, but you’d be surprised.

As Dany’s confidence has grown over the course of the series, so too has Emilia’s. A relatively unknown actress at the start of the series, Emilia is now an internationally recognized star. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Emilia says of Dany, “It’s the growth of a girl into a woman. She's being thrown into the deep end, to see if she can sink or swim, and she decides to do it her way. It was wonderful to see a character with such humble beginnings, and such low self-esteem, beginning to trust herself. So my feelings within filming it were echoed — in a much more dramatic way, obviously.”

There’s one more way Emilia relates to Dany that she reveals in the interview, relating to shared experiences. Remember when Dany had to eat that horse heart back in season 1? “I tried a robin heart once,” Emilia says, while quickly adding, “It wasn’t very good.”
