On Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen has been through a lot. She’s been married and then widowed. Impregnated and then miscarried. She’s discovered she’s immune to fire, brought dragons back from extinction, killed a wizard, ate a horse heart, ruled a Khalasar, and liberated three slave cities. Dany seems pretty young to have accomplished so much, but how old is the actress who portrays her, Emilia Clarke?

Emilia just turned 27, having been born on May 1, 1987. The version of Daenerys from the A Song of Ice and Fire books is much younger, only 14 years old, making her accomplishments that much more impressive (and disturbing). The show has a habit of aging up several main characters so they don’t have to deal with the awkward stages of child actors growing up on screen. For instance, Jon Snow and Robb Stark are also both 14 at the start of the books, and their respective actors Kit Harington and Richard Madden are both 27 IRL.

We don’t really blame the show for increasing these characters ages, especially Daenerys. Showing a 14 year old girl miscarry would be pretty intense, even for GoT, and following the leadership quest of a woman in her mid-twenties just seems much more believable than watching a whiny teenager who wants to be queen!
