Emilia Clarke’s Best Moments as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones

Emilia Clarke has become recognized the world over for her role as Daenerys on HBO’s hit Game of Thrones, and she’s had her fair share of iconic scenes. With GoT Season 4 less than a week away, let’s take a look back at her most defining moments so far.

Heart eater. Dany proves early on that she will go to great lengths to get what she wants, including eating the entire heart of a horse... raw. The grotesque scene is enough to make Fear Factor fans wince, but it played an important role in Dany’s transformation into the force we know her as today.

Fire cannot kill a dragon. Another sign of how much Dany wants power is when she casually has her brother Viserys murdered by her husband, Khal Drogo. Viserys was terrible to her and totally deserved what he got, and Dany’s marriage to the Khal finally allowed her to remove herself from underneath Viserys’ thumb. The way she calmly states that “fire cannot kill a dragon” after her brother has molten gold poured on his head gives us the chills.

Mother of Dragons. Distraught and seemingly losing her will to live, Dany climbs onto the funeral pyre of her dead husband with her three priceless dragon eggs. She must be crazy, right? Crazy like a dragon! When the smoke clears and the ashes settle, Dany appears unscathed and clutching the first dragons the world’s seen in years. The scene serves as the closer to Aeason 1, and gives us the first look at the messianistic Dany who goes on to gain a following throughout the world.

Dracarys. Without a doubt Dany’s most badass scene, her unleashing her dragon on the slave city of Astapor just might be the most thrilling scene of the entire series, period. Her gaining control of the slave army, instructing them to slay the slave masters, and then admonishing the misogynist slave driver Kraznys in Valyrian, revealing that she knew he was insulting her the whole time, was all amazing. The whole scene was so perfect that her uttering “Dracarys” and setting Kraznys on fire was almost too much for us to handle!

Mhysa. Another season closer for Dany, we see just how far she’s come in her journey. While the Season 1 season saw her alone and naked with baby dragons, Season 3 closes with her awash in a sea of freed slaves calling her “mother.” It’s a powerful image, and we can’t wait to see how Dany capitalizes on her newfound status as Daenerys Targaryen: Superstar in Season 4.
