We all thought it was Kerry Washington’s year, but at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards, she lost Lead Actress in a Drama Series to fellow D.C. drama-based lead actress Claire Danes. Did Homeland rob Scandal this year? Read on for our thoughts!

After Jeff Daniels won for The Newsroom, it looked like the Homeland sweep wouldn’t be felt this year, but when it came to Lead Actress, Kerry couldn’t take down Claire’s powerful Carrie Mathison. Olivia Pope might be able to fix everything on Scandal, but she couldn’t fix the votes this year.

But with Homeland receiving less of a critical love-fest this year and Scandal ramping up the drama and being live-tweeted by every human on Earth, we’re surprised that Kerry didn’t take home the trophy.

Fear not, Gladiators! Our beacon of hope comes from none other than showrunner Shonda Rhimes. “Gonna get some wine and some popcorn and put on my white pajamas and just be fierce all over my living room. #gladiatorsdontcry,” she tweeted after Kerry lost.

We feel you, Shonda. We’re drying our tears too. Hopefully Kerry can take home the prize next year!
