Emmys Criticized for Cory Monteith Tribute — Producer Defends the Choice!

The 2013 Emmy Awards are happening this Sunday, September 22, and as part of the show, producers have decided to have a tribute to Cory Monteith, the Glee star who passed away suddenly in July.

However, not everyone thinks it is such a good idea for the show to honor Cory with and “In Memoriam” montage and a special segment. After all, he was never nominated for an Emmy. The 31-year-old star really only had one big role during his career: That of football jock Finn Hudson on Glee. Sure, he branched out a bit in a handful of indie movies, but none of them were nominated for any big awards.

On September 18, Emmys executive producer Ken Ehrich addressed the criticism, and to stand up for the choice to pay tribute to Cory during the show.

“Cory’s appeal was to maybe a little different generation than some of the others, and we felt they needed to be represented,” he said during a press conference. Sure, Cory doesn’t have a long career full of cinematic successes. But the still managed to make a huge mark on the lives of countless young people.

“It was important to be responsive to younger viewers, to whom Cory Monteith meant as much as the other four individuals [James Gandolfini, Gary David Goldberg, Jonathan Winters, and Jean Stapleton] meant to their own generations. We made the choice it was important to have, as part of these segments.”

Though Ken acknowledges that he knows not everyone will agree with the decision to include Cory in the tribute, he firmly asserts that “we stand by what we’re doing.” Do you agree with the choice, or do you think a Cory tribute should be reserved only for a different awards show? Head below and let us know what you think.
