Emmys 2013 : Why Weren’t Dan Stevens and Jessica Brown Findlay Nominated?
Since Downton Abbeytook over our lives premiered three years ago, the hit British period drama has dominated at the Emmy Awards and this year proved no different, with Downton earning a whopping 12 nominations.
As we all know — and if you don’t, stop reading now —Matthew and Sybil died during Season 3. We’ve had some time to process this and have even gotten pretty far along in the stages of grief (we’re on #3 or bargaining, as in “Julian Fellowes, we’ll say we like your Romeo and Juliet adaptation better than Baz Luhrmann's if you bring Matthew back.”) But did the key characters lose out on 2013 Emmy noms because they left the Abbey?
If you ask us, the decision not to include either does feel a bit personal? Especially since both Jessica and Dan gave arguably their most dramatically charged performances during the season that killed them. Jessica’s death from eclampsia and Dan’s look of undiluted joy in the moments before he crashed and burned deserve their very own Emmys.
But the worst wrong of all: Now that they’ve left the show, neither will ever receive a Downton-related Emmy. It’s a major oversight especially seeing as returning and less plot-important characters Carson and the Earl of Grantham both made the nominee list.
There is one upside though. Now that they’re off being movie stars, Jessica and Dan could find themselves up for another one-name award featuring a trophy of a naked person. Fingers crossed!
