Emmys 2013: Game of Thrones Star Emilia Clarke Nominated: “It Is Such a Huge Honor”

All hail Mother of Dragons! Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has finally gotten a much-deserved Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It must have been the dragon attack that did it.

Many critics predicted (and hoped) Emilia would get a nom back in Season 1, for so perfectly capturing Dany's transformation from meek, abused girl to triumphant Khaleesi and Mother of Dragons, but it was not to be. Season 2 was also a disappointment, but Emilia's work in Season 3 apparently caught the Academy's attention, and we couldn't be happier about it.

The other nominees in the category are last year's winner, Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men).

We reached out to Emilia's rep for the star's response to her big nomination. Here's what she had to say: "Wow! It is such a huge honor to be recognized by the Academy and to be among such a brilliant group of women. I am thrilled for Peter, Diana, David and Dan, HBO and the entire cast and crew of Game of Thrones. I can't begin to tell you how proud I am to go to work every day with this incredible team who has become a second family. I am so grateful to David and Dan for taking a chance on me and giving me the privilege of being the mother of dragons. Yer chomoe anhaan. Jin ha Khalaan, shekh ma shieraki anni. (That’s 'You do honor to me. This is for the Khal - my sun and stars' in Dothraki.)"

Game of Thrones itself was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Peter Dinklage got his third nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Diana Rigg was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss got a writing nom for "The Rains of Castamere," and the show also got a bevy of technical noms.

The 2013 Emmy Awards will air on September 22, 2013.
