Emmys 2013: Who Will Win Best Actor In a Drama?

The 2013 Emmys Awards air this Sunday, September 22, 2013. You know what that means you only have a few more days to solidify the perfect picks for your Emmy pool. (We're not the only ones who do those, right? Right.) Need some help? We're going to run down the biggest categories with our thoughts on who stands a chance, who's totally hopeless, and who should win, starting with the heavily stacked Best Lead Actor in A Drama category.

Who Will Win

Here's where we think each nominee stands, in order of least to most likely winner.

Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey. Given that Dame Maggie Smith was the only Downton Abbey actor able to score a trophy during the series's buzzy second season last year, we doubt anyone but her stands a chance this year, either.

Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom. Jeff Daniels turned in a perfectly solid performance as the bombastic Will McAvoy, but neither he nor The Newsroom stands out enough to have a real shot at winning.

Jon Hamm, Mad Men. Jon Hamm was great on Mad Men this year, but he's great on Mad Men every year, and he's yet to win. At this point, we're pretty sure it's never going to happen, and if it does it will probably be for the show's final season.

Damian Lewis, Homeland. Here's where we start to get into questionable territory. Damian Lewis won last year, and he was just as good in Season 2. Plus, he has a fantastic submission episode with "Q&A," which was one of the best episode of any show all season. We wouldn't be surprised to see him come out on top again.

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad. Honestly, between Bryan Cranston and Kevin Spacey it's a total toss up. Bryan Cranston has won this category three of the four times he's been eligible, and he was as fantastic as ever in last summer's first half of Season 5. In fact, the only reason we don't have him as the clear first choice is...

Winner: Kevin Spacey, House of Cards. Kevin Spacey is Kevin Spacey. The Emmys love to reward big movie stars who move to TV. Another thing the Emmys like to reward? Buzz. As Netflix's first original show, House of Cards had that in spades. Plus, Kevin Spacey's performance on House of Cards completely justifies giving him the win. That's a lot of points in his favor.

Who Should Win

Sorry Kevin Spacey, but even if we're right, Bryan Cranston will always be the deserving number one in our eyes. Why? Well, we thought he was so good we wrote a whole article about why this category should belong to him.
