Glee to Officially End After Sixth Season, Ryan Murphy Says

We’ve had our suspicions that the hit FOX dramedy Glee would take its final bow after Season 6 wraps, but now we finally know for sure. Co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the news at a Paley Center event honoring FX Networks Wednesday night.

But that wasn’t the only news that Ryan let slip last night. He also confirmed that Cory Monteith’s death has forced him to rework the ending of the series.

“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” Ryan told reporters at the event (via TVLine). “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew when the last show was — he was in it. I knew what the last line was — she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”

“I have a good idea,” Ryan continued. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love.”

Glee was renewed for two more seasons after Season 4, and with the show staying stagnant and losing ground in the ratings (except for the Cory Monteith tribute, which was 75 percent up from the previous week), this news is big but not shocking. Even FOX president Kevin Reilly told reporters in August 2013 that he didn’t see the series continuing after Season 6, although Ryan had envisioned the show continuing to Season 8 before…

So while we’ll miss our favorite Lima residents (and New York newbies), at least we have the rest of this season and all of next to say goodbye.
