True Blood Ending After Season 7 — When Is the Series Finale?

The time has come, Truebies. HBO announced today that True Blood will end its run in 2014 after its seventh — and now final — season airs. HBO revealed the series’ fate via a press release today from network president Michael Lombardo, who called the vampire drama “nothing short of a defining show for HBO.”

Michael also praised the work of the show’s stars, producers, and creator, Alan Ball, who left after Season 5. “Alan Ball took the books by Charlaine Harris, assembled a brilliant cast led by the magnificent Anna Paquin in the role of Sookie Stackhouse, and crafted a show that has taken its many devoted fans on an unforgettable journey. Alan passed the baton to Brian Buckner, who led our fantastic writers and crew in crafting a spectacular sixth season, and he will lead us through the seventh and final season of this amazing show,” he continued.

To many True Blood fans, this cancellation doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Viewers complained that they were underwhelmed and even confused by Season 6, which just completed it’s shortened 10-episode run last month.

Still, new showrunner Brian Buckner is grateful for the True Blood experience, and hopes to go out with a bang in 2014. “I feel enormously proud to have been a part of the True Blood family since the very beginning,” he said. “I guarantee that there’s not a more talented or harder-working cast and crew out there, and I’d like to extend a personal heartfelt thanks to them for their dedication and tenacity over the years, especially this past year, as I stepped into a larger role. Thank you also to HBO for their unwavering support and of course to Alan Ball, whose genius enabled all of us to share in this incredible journey.”

Last, but certainly not least, Brian was sure to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all Truebies.

“Finally, a huge thank you to the most passionate fans in television. As we take a final walk through Bon Temps together, we will do our very best to bring Sookie’s story to a close with heart, imagination and, of course, fun.”

The good news is that this means the writers will have a year to craft the perfect final farewell to Bon Temps. What can we expect from the final installment of the series?

Well, based on the spoilers we've seen so far, the end of Season 6 was no mislead. Brian Buckner has expressed a desire to return the focus to the heart of the show: vamps and human trying to learn to live together as one community. Now that there's confirmation that this is the final season, we're betting Brian will double his efforts to stick to that thematic core, and we should be seeing all of the main characters interacting in the same storylines, instead of having multiple different stories going on at once.

While we can't see into the future, we also predict the show will finally give us some resolution to Sookie's endless romantic entanglements. We'll see Bill return to his old, not-so-douchebag self, which means (once again)he'll be back in the picture, romantically. Only time will tell how that shakes out, though chances are Sook may end up with her “first love”; that's how these things tend to go.

Plus, this doesn't mean we have to say goodbye to our fave stars — Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, and Alexander Skarsgard, especially, seem to be more famous than ever these days. We're sure they'll continue to land film and TV roles left and right.

Is True Blood’s cancellation a surprise, or were you expecting this? Tell us your thoughts below!
