Eric Northman’s Return: True Blood Producer “Did Not Confirm That He’s Alive”

If you’re like the rest of us Truebies, the Season 6 finale of True Blood left you with a few questions, but the most burning one (pun intended) was whether Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) met the his true death. Executive producer Brian Buckner sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly and, while he won’t confirm or deny if Eric died, he did say he will be back next season.

“I did not confirm that he’s alive. Not that I want to create more conversation, because I don’t, but to be clear, we’re not saying how we’re going to use him, we’re simply saying that we are using him,” the showrunner revealed.

If you ask us, that sounds like he lives, since having him be a ghost of some kind would just be kind of silly, don’t you think? Perhaps that’s our wishful thinking, but as Brian said,, “I don’t want to watch a show without him either.”

It was Brian’s call to have Eric sunbathing nude on a snow-covered Swedish mountaintop, and while female fans obviously weren’t looking for a reason behind it, the exec producer says there was more to it than gratuitous nudity.

“This is a man who doesn’t want to love, and doesn’t want to feel pain, and every connection he has to people ends in pain. So if Eric could be an island, he would be. So with Nora gone, and having sought vengeance for her death, he found that the pain was still there and he doesn’t want to feel it again. So he retreated and returned home,” he explains. He could have gone for the beach, but Brian said that would have been too “obvious.”

Interestingly enough, EW also uncovered that the book Eric was reading in his final scene of the season was chosen by the actor himself. Ever the scholar, A.Skars chose Den allvarsamma leken by Hjalmar Soderberg. The translation is as follows: The Serious Game. According to Amazon, it’s “Sweden’s most celebrated and enduring love story.” This guy really is looking for love!

As for whether the heartbroken vamp chose the mountain top because he was suicidal, Brian says that’s absolutely not the case.“It was a surprise to all the vampires who realized that they just lost their ability to walk in the sun, but Eric was the only one in a time zone where it was light out.” In other words, none of them knew that when Warlow died their sun-walking days were over.

What do you think is Eric alive? Sound off below!
