Peter Dinklage Tells Esquire About the Time a Man Died Right in Front of Him

Peter Dinklage’s Game of Thrones character Tyrion Lannister has seen plenty of death in his time. But in an interview for the March issue of Esquire (which features the Dinks himself on the cover), we learn that he’s seen some real-life carnage, too.

In a conversation about making connections with strangers, Peter relates the sad tale to Esquire’s Mike Sager. “I was walking down Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles,” he begins. “There was this guy on a motorcycle right in front of me ... maybe six feet [away]? And he looked at me. He didn’t wave, but he looked at me, and then he pulled out into traffic and this car, like, boom — killed him instantly.”

Peter seems overwhelmed with the feeling he had made a connection with the man in that split-second before the impact, before rushing into a coffee shop to call for an ambulance. When he returned to the scene, the motorcyclist was already dead.

“So there was this quiet moment where it was like I was the only person in the world who knew this guy was dead,” he muses. “And I was there looking at him, you know, in those moments of calm after something horrible happens, the calm before the melee starts, before the ambulances and the cops arrive and it becomes a scene. There was that moment when I was with him.”

As Peter wonders about where the young man might have been headed before his life was brutally cut short, the interviewer asks a totally cringe-inducing question. “Do you think you might have distracted him?” We can only assume he asked because of Peter’s small stature.

It seems the actor was just as appalled by the question. “Oh, my God! F—k you. How dare — Oh, Mike. I never thought of that before. This was supposed to be a story about how I actually connected with a stranger.”

Way to ruin Peter’s beautiful, sad memory, dude!
