Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is our fearless leader on The Walking Dead, so when he bites someone in the neck — to death! — then says the Termites are “screwing with the wrong people” we know the stakes for everyone have just been upped. Farmer Rick is dead, long live the savage Ricktator … and his team of equally savage monsters?
Showrunner Scott Gimple recently sat down with Larry King, and Larry read off a bunch of fan questions for Scott to answer. One was, "Will everyone get as savage as Rick did sooner or later?" Scott answered, "Hmm, that's a great question. I think everyone will have to face being as savage as Rick sooner or later. Whether everyone can do that is the question for almost every character." Interesting.
We know a lot of characters are already willing to be savage. Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) has gone there — big time — in a way we never would’ve imagined in the first three seasons. Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) bonded over their inner monsters. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) can go dark when he needs to. Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) were willing to risk other people’s lives to find each other — and Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) daughter even used walker blood to write on Terminus signs. Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) seems like she has that kind of toughness to her, same for Abraham’s group.
What about Tara (Alanna Masterson), though? She hid from The Governor’s (David Morrissey) savagery, so could she ever get to that place herself? And Tyreese (Chad Coleman) can be savage in his anger, and when it’s hammer time with walkers, but he’s kind of a softie in every other way. And what about Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.)? Does Bob have that kind of savageness to him? He seems too much like our new Hershel. What about Beth Greene (Emily Kinney)? Beth has new tracking skills and she’s more independent than before, but she still has so much light and hope to her. Could Beth ever get that dark?
We left most of Team Prison in a Terminus train car, ready to fight their way out in Season 5. But who, in that group and beyond, may not be up to the savage challenge? Any ideas of who’ll step up and who might not quite be able to bite back?
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
