Extreme Weight Loss: Heidi & Chris Powell on Season 4’s Changes and Surprises — Exclusive

Television's most transformative TV show, Extreme Weight Loss, starts its fourth season tonight, May 27 — airing at 8 p.m. ET on ABC — so Wetpaint Entertainment got all the scoop from star Chris Powell and his wife, Heidi… who plays a very big role in Season 4. Read on!

Wetpaint Entertainment: We've been binge-watching Season 3 episodes…

Chris Powell: That's an appropriate choice of words! [Laughs]

We didn't even notice that pun! But how will Season 4 be different?

CP: Oh my gosh. Yes, we've got a lot of differences. We definitely got our first father-daughter couple. We got our first mother-son. We got the first person to be kicked off the show and the first person to quit. But above and beyond all of that is, I've got this hot new co-host…

Heidi Powell: He'd better be talking about me! [Both laugh.]

CP: … in the form of my beautiful wife, Heidi, who's been by my side from day one, of course. Even since Season 1, we've been working on the transformations together. But this time, she's in front of the cameras. I finagled her enough, and I convinced her that it was OK out there.

HP: And I've had to conquer a lot of fears being in front of the camera, so I'm becoming stronger at the same time.

CP: But she's finally where she belongs, and that's side-by-side with me, working with these people. I mean, it really has been a year of firsts.

HP: What's different this year as opposed to last year, as well: In the past Chris has actually been traveling to their home state, surprising them, and staying with them for an extended period of time. Well, this year, we actually surprise them, and we bring them all to Denver for 90 days. Chris and I actually move our family for 90 days, and we work with them every single day. So they get to work with the both of us every day of that 90-day period [at] the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, which is where we set up shop.

You have found really cool ways of having Chris surprise participants in the past. Are there any really fun set-ups in Season 4?

CP: There are some fun ones! [Both laugh.] For one of them, actually, I surprised a chef. It was hilarious. He was actually presenting a lot of meals he had prepared for one of his classes because [he] teaches at a culinary school. And so I was the main entree when he was lifting all of the metal shields off the plates! … I was supposed to be, I don't know, roast beef or something. [Both laugh.] He took the top off, and my head was right there, and I jumped out and said, "Dude, I surprised you!" And he freaked out. Literally, I thought he was going to have a heart attack right there.

One guy was playing with his band in Nashville, and he was playing one of the joints in Nashville … And I had learned the song that I knew was going to be on his list, and so as soon as he started playing that song, I came out jamming with them, and we actually finished the song on stage together. And he was just bawling. Because at first when I walked out there and I'm jamming to the song, he stopped, and I was like, "Keep going, man! I know this song!" And we jammed to it together. And he just sat there next to me, just crying the whole time.

And we saw in the previews that you get to go to homecoming this season, Chris!

CP: Yeah! [Both laugh.] I get to relive my glory days in high school, which was certainly interesting! And I think, shortly after we got to the school, she was regretting her decision when I started dancing. [Both laugh.] I figured, "It's my party, too, and I want to have some fun." I brought the dances. I don't know if it was "cool" according to teenagers these days, but that's OK. I was my own little one-man party.

What else is going on in your lives right now?

CP: Very shortly we're going to be launching a website … We have an opportunity to work with 15 to 17 people a year, but there are millions of people out there that want to go through the course of transformation. So we're actually going to be developing and launching a fully interactive online site here in the next month, and it's going to be amazing. It will have everything that we do to help people transform.

Extreme Weight Loss Season 4 premieres tonight, May 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
