Fantasia Talks Upcoming Album: Singing Is “My Therapy”

Fantasia Barrino has kept us plenty entertained with photos of her adorable kidlets during the past several months, but this hot mama’s been busy professionally too! The American Idol Season 3 winner has been hard at work preparing her latest musical project and now she’s finally ready to reveal key details. You ready, too? Keep on readin’ if you want the latest!

Chatting up Billboard, the 29-year-old says she’ll be headed back to the studio soon and is bringing along an old friend: producer Harmony Samuels, aka her “Quincy Jones.”

I feel like I should always do albums with Harmony because he gets me,” Fantasia explains. “We started [last album] Side Effects of You from scratch with him going to the keyboard and just playing things. I’d be like, ‘I like that. Keep going.’ Whenever you can create an album like that, it’s amazing.”

Side Effects of You will have plenty to do with her next batch of songs, Fantasia adds. The “whole rock soul direction” she introduced on the 2013 album isn’t going away anytime soon, she says. “I’ll always be soulful,” the Broadway actress explains. “I started singing in the church at the age of 5. So that will never go anywhere.”

Fantasia, who turns 30 on June 30 (happy golden birthday, girl!), says she’s “grateful” for all of the ups and downs that have led her to this point “ten years in the game.”

“I think I would go crazy if I couldn't hit the stage. It’s my therapy,” she tells Billboard. “It’s the place where I can just let loose and be free. It’s also my way of giving God back the glory for giving me this gift.”
