Pretty Little Liars Fatal Finale Is Most “Shocking and Heartbreaking” Episode Ever, Says Lucy Hale — Exclusive

Lucy Hale knows who’s going to die in tonight’s Season 5 summer finale of Pretty Little Liars (“Taking This One to the Grave”), but she’s not telling. But this pretty little secret-keeper did tell Wetpaint Entertainment that this episode if not only the show’s most shocking reveal, it’s also its most heartbreaking — and no one is safe from “A.” Even Lucy admits that this is one twist she never saw coming.

We chatted with the Pretty Little Liars starlet about the “heartbreaking” summer finale and where Aria and Ezria’s pseudo-relationship is headed. (Spoiler alert: Ezria fans may not like what Lucy has to say.) Check out more scoop on Season 5 in our interview below!

Wetpaint Entertainment: Aria has had a really interesting season, where she’s kind of been separated from the Ali drama. In fact, we’re not entirely sure how Aria feels about Ali. With all of the other Liars, it’s very apparent that they don’t trust Ali, but what about Aria?

Lucy Hale: What’s crazy is I think that’s something that’s going to be revealed later on in the season that we haven’t even shot yet. You know, you’ve seen a lot of flashbacks [of Ali and the girls], so you know that Emily is attracted to Ali, and Spencer and Ali have this intense rivalry, and then Hanna and Ali sort of see eye-to-eye more than the other girls, but Aria is left in the dark. I think that where we’re at right now, there’s a lot of resentment towards her because of everything she’s put the girls through and the fact that Ezra was in love with Ali originally. And Ezra only wanted to be with Aria because of Ali, so there’s a lot of hurt feelings. And that’s going to unfold even more. What we’re shooting right now, it’s still a little unclear, but I think that will unfold as the season goes on. Because I’m curious too!

Ella and Byron have been spending more one-on-one time together lately. Obviously, Ella just had her heart broken, so it’s going to take some time, but do you want to see Aria’s parents get back together? Is that something that could happen?

I don’t know! I think it might be going in that direction — as Aria, yeah, I’m sure she would love to see her parents together — but I think it’s more interesting that they’re not together. So I don’t know where that’s going. I’m obviously just as in the dark as you are! But that’s what keeps it so fun.

We need something to have a happy ending on Pretty Little Liars! Maybe it will be Ella.

Someone will. If not all, at least one!

And of course, we have to ask about Ezria. They’re very much in this weird limbo place. Is that going to be resolved by the end of the season?

I mean, it is sort of a weird thing right now. After everything that happened in Season 4 with Aria and Ezra, that’s still resonating, and I think Aria is still really cautious about what she’s doing. She obviously loves the guy. I think there’s a disconnect between them because they’re not really the same Aria and Ezra that they were before. So I don’t know. If I were to guess — and this isn’t anything we’ve shot or are planning to shoot, to my knowledge — I would say that they might drift apart for a little bit. I think that they’re completely different people. I think ultimately, they’ll get back together, but they need some time apart. The nature of their relationship has always been like a push and pull; they’ve never really been completely normal. But this is definitely the most confusing season for them as a couple. Who knows where it will go!

At least Ella is now on their side. That was kind of surprising when she told Aria to reach out to Ezra. And now he’s getting invited over for Thanksgiving dinner!

I know! It’s like the weirdest parent advice ever. But she’s like the cool mom, and I think she’s been through a lot of heartbreak, so she understands forgiveness.

What can you tease about this #FatalFinale?

This, for me, is one of the most shocking and one of the most heartbreaking episodes of Pretty Little Liars we’ve ever done. What happens is very heartbreaking, and I, personally, did not see it coming from a million miles away.

It’s so cool that you’re a spokesperson for Nestlé Crunch and the Girl Scouts of the USA’s "Let's Get Her to Camp" campaign. What made you want to be apart of it?

It’s a really awesome campaign that raises money to send a bunch of girls to camp for next summer. Although I wasn’t a Girl Scout, I got the opportunity to go to camp and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to do things like that, and I know that there’s a lot of less fortunate people out there that don’t always get to do those things. I really stand by what the Girl Scouts preach and what they teach young females. It builds character and confidence and girls aren’t afraid to try new things. That’s what I love about it, and I wanted to jump onboard.

Do you prefer camping or glamping?

I grew up in the south, so if I’m going camping, I’m going camping — for real. I haven’t been camping in a really long time. That being said, I appreciate a good hotel. But no, if I’m going to do it, I’m going to go all out — no showering, making your own food, and just roughing it.

But how will you tweet your millions of fans?

That’s true! There’s no cell phone plugs out there, and I get anxiety if I don’t have my phone, so maybe camping isn’t in my future.

Who do you think will die in the #FatalFinale? And are you sad to hear Ezra and Aria might drift apart? Sound off in the comments!
