‘Father of the Year’ Winner Bill Clinton Shares Chelsea’s Birth Story

Bill Clinton was named Father of the Year at this week’s Save The Children fundraising event, and as usual, the former Commander in Chief had the perfect story for the occasion.

Parade Magazine reports that once the former president took over the podium from his beaming daughter Chelsea, he decided to share her birth story with the audience. Clinton recalled how he had just arrived home from a conference in Washington, D.C. when Hillary’s water broke.

As they arrived at the hospital, they were told that Chelsea was a breech baby and doctors informed them that she would need to be delivered via cesarean section. At that time, fathers weren't allowed in the operating room, but Clinton recalls saying, “If you send her into that room without me, I think you’re making a big mistake. I want to see my daughter born.”

The doctors relented and Clinton was able to hold Hillary's hand during the birth. In some very moving words, Clinton said, "From that day to this, I have believed without the shadow of a doubt that it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wasn't in attendance, but she sent a text saying, “Congratulations. I think you deserve this.” Clinton, sharing her message with the audience, said, “In our family, that’s a very big deal.”

The National Father's Day Committee is an organization whose mission is to "promote the celebration, observation, and preservation of the holidays Mother's Day and Father's Day by focusing on the value of good sound parenting.” They cited the former president's philanthropy as the reason for bestowing him with the award.
