Downton Abbey Season 4: What Happens in the February 9 Episode?

It’s officially upon us: the month that Downton Abbey Season 4 comes to an end. We only have three episodes ahead including the two-hour finale on Sunday, February 23. So what can we expect from the next round of Downton drama? One word: choices.

After weeks of build-up, some of the season’s biggest story lines are coming to a head with less than happy outcomes for a few members of the Crawley household. Keep reading for a preview of what to expect in the February 9 episode, as broken down by leading characters. If you want all the details from the episode, we just happened to have watched it last autumn when it aired in the U.K., which means spoilers galore. That is, if you’re interested in spoilers.

Robert Crawley
Say goodbye to Crawley patriarch Robert (Hugh Bonneville). He’s setting sail this episode to help his brother-in-law (Paul Giamatti) settle a legal snafu over in the States. Unfortunately, his departure means valet Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) may have to join him and leave his still recovering wife...

The Dowager Countess
Uh-oh! The Dowager’s (Maggie Smith) sick! This episode reminds us that she’s not as young and spry as her cutting remarks may suggest.

Lady Mary and Charles Blake
Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden) didn’t exactly hit it off when they were introduced during last week’s episode, but a little crisis down on the farm will fix that come February 9.

Lady Edith
Last week we learned Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) is pregnant with the child of her lover, Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards). Michael, however, is nowhere to be found since he departed for Germany and this week Edith must choose whether or not to keep their baby.

Mr. Green Returns
We tell you this now so you can start collecting rotten fruit to throw at your television screen. One upside: Mr. Green (Nigel Harmen) returning means his employer, the dreamy Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen), is also coming back to Downton.

New Character Alert!
Keeping with the theme of new romance, we’ll be meeting Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis) this episode. She’s the latest love interest for Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and while he’s hesitant to pursue anyone after the loss of his Sybil, Sarah proves to be very persistent.
