Fifty Shades of Grey Casting: British Artist Sam Taylor-Johnson Confirmed as Director

We may not have our Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele yet, but we know who will be directing the sexy screen couple! Sam Taylor-Johnson (sometimes known as Sam Taylor-Wood) has been confirmed as the director, TheWrap reports. Sam's directorial debut was the 2009 biopic Nowhere Boy, about the childhood of late Beatles star John Lennon, but her career as a professional photographer and visual artist has been active for decades, most notably with her work "Crying Men," which features, fittingly, celebrity men crying, including Robin Williams and Sean Penn.

Sam beat out some super-notable directors for the part: Gus Van Sant, who even shot a test reel for the film, and Darren Aronofsky, who was apparently offered the role but was still finishing up his Biblical movie, Noah. Too bad — the transition on that last one would've been interesting!

“For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia," says Sam of her new gig, "They are under my skin too.”

Sam, 46, is married to Kick-Ass 2 star Aaron Johnson, 23. This has led to some speculation about whether Aaron, who starred as young John Lennon in Nowhere Boy, will play Christian. If he did sign on, it would make the film a wholly British affair, with Amazing Spider-Man 2 actress Felicity Jones rumored to be Anastasia and Kelly Marcel signed on to write the screenplay. TheWrap said that he's "not expected to pursue the role," but anything is possible!

“Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life,” says co-producer Michael De Luca, “E.L. James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed, and Sam is a natural fit.”

We're excited the movie is moving forward, and we think that Sam's experience in cradle-robbing will be a boon on this project! (We're kidding. Good for her!)

What do you think about this choice for director?
