While Matt's fans win the most-vocal award, they weren't the only fandom that was disappointed.
Other dreamy favorites for the role of Christian included The Vampire Diaries'Ian Somerhalder,Man of Steel's Henry Cavill, and Alexander Skarsgardof True Blood. Popular picks for the female lead (let's be real, picks for viewer analogues) includedLucy Hale, Alexis Bledel, and Amanda Seyfried. 21-year-old Shailene Woodley of Secret Life of the American Teenager apparently turned down the role before it was eventually offered to, and accepted by, Dakota Johnson.
Matt's thoughts on the petition were short and polite, almost mirroring his comments on early casting rumors. He started out with a brief "No comment [...] That's my line on that." He later continued, "It's very flattering that I've got fans who would like to see me in things."
In a site that mainly deals in political opinions, the campaign calling for Matt and Alexis to be recast in the roles — complete with a fan-made poster — certainly stood out. However, the fervor in petition organizer @dontouchmypatch 's comments and description was certainly a little more intense than some others.
"Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too [sic]," reads the initial description. Once the petition had reached over 11,000 signatures, she added, "I'M SO PROUD OF EVERYONE WHO IS HELP RIGHT NOW."
After 30,000 signatures, she clarified, "MANY PEOPLE SAY THAT WE ARE DOING THIS TO CRITICIZE AND MAKE FUN OF DAKOTA JOHNSON AND CHARLIE HUNNAM... IT'S NOT TRUE, WE ARE DOING THIS BECAUSE WE WANT AND DESERVE TO BE HEARD."
