After Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey, it seemed like every guy in Hollywood was vying for the role of sexy business magnate Christian Grey.
Producers have been on a mission to find the perfect replacement, with a list of contenders that includes True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard, Australian actor Luke Bracey, Romeo & Juliet’s Christian Cooke, and The Borgias star Francois Arnaud.
Well, it looks like we can stop speculating whose abs we’ll get to ogle, because Variety has exclusively revealed that Jamie Dornan has been chosen for the role!
Fans of Fifty Shades might not be all that familiar with Jamie (yet), but he’s already making his mark on TV. The 31-year-old Irish actor has recently been seen as Sheriff Graham Humbert on ABC’s fantasy drama Once Upon a Time, and currently stars on the BBC crime drama The Fall.
On top of his acting credits, Jamie also performs in an Irish folk duo and has modeled for top brands like Calvin Klein, Armani, and Christian Dior. (Just look at those abs!)
The search for Christian Grey has been long and hard, and competition between different fandoms has been stiff. Fans of The Vampire Diaries wanted Ian Somerhalder in the film very, very badly. Ian didn't have time, but he was exceedingly grateful for the fan support. Twilight fans swore by Robert Pattinson, and rumors swirled even more furiously when reports pegged author E.L. James at Rob's Great Gatsby-themed party. However, other reports stated that the author cut R.Patz out of the running herself. Harsh!
Other fan favorites included The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus and Magic Mike's Matt Bomer. In fact, some fans were so angry Matt wasn't cast that they petitioned the filmmakers online.
Reception to the decision to cast Charlie Hunnam was mixed; some seemed skeptical that he could get past his scruffy biker role in Sons of Anarchy, despite a demonstrated ability for some sexy sex scenes. Ultimately, though, Charlie had to drop out due to some "family stuff."
